About Dulles International Airport
Of the three airports servicing our nation’s capital, Washington Dulles International (IAD) handles the most daily flights with a dozen domestic and two-dozen international carriers flying non-stop to over 125 destinations around the globe. Located 26 miles outside D.C. in the heart of Virginia’s exclusive Fairfax County, Dulles is the East Coast hub for United Airlines, and the US base for Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, which maintains a training facility there.
Renovations have been going on at Dulles for what may seem like an eternity to frequent flyers who use the airport as a home base. By the time the construction is finished – at some as yet indeterminate date in the future – an underground train system will have replaced the clumsy mobile lounges, a pedestrian walkway will connect the main terminal with concourses A and B, and the airport’s passenger load will have tripled – from 18 million to 55 million passengers a year. In the meantime, passengers must walk carefully between eateries like the Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant, shopping opportunities like Brooks Brothers clothiers, and the Smithsonian Museum Store, and their departure gates.
